What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is about helping the body naturally heal itself and function better. The healing process is achieved by gently inserting fine needles into precisely defined points on the body. Each acupuncture point is tied to its therapeutic purpose, and insertion points vary depending on the patient’s symptoms.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

The ancient Chinese recognised a vital force, Qi (pronounced "chee"), the basis of all life. Qi flows along specific pathways in the body known as Meridians. When Qi becomes blocked, deficient, or stagnant, we experience the signs and symptoms of pain and illness. An acupuncturist learns precise points at which blockages may be relieved. The proper placement of needles may enhance the flow of Qi, and may restore the body and mind to a more harmonious state. Each point has a designated effect on the energy passing through it. This system of medicine came from carefully recorded observations, passed from master to student over thousands of years.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Many people associate needles with pain, though acupuncture needles are exceptionally thin, sterile, and designed for comfort. They gently stimulate specific points on the body, with most patients experiencing little to no discomfort—sometimes just a slight stinging or a mild sensation of pressure.

Your acupuncturist will work with you to create a treatment plan tailored to your needs and symptoms, outlining the recommended number of sessions and their frequency.
